There is a huge puddle that you think is only one inch deep but really it's more like four inches. At speed, the front of the car drops enough that the whole front fascia takes a brief dip. The splash guard gives you just enough of a shield to displace the water sideways, away from your aftermarket cone air intake. Without the splash guard, there is only air space between your intake and water underneath it. With or without a splash guard, once you plant the nose of your Z in water deeper than the splash guard and leave it there, the water will rise above the splash guard and suck into your intake, leading to hydrolock and engine failure. That's why it's called a SPLASH guard, and not a water-proof-SCUBA sealer-thingy.
